Orton cone template – measuring the bend of fired cones
With the laminated Orton cone template you can see after the firing how far your Orton cones have bent. Place the fired cone against the template and compare the bend angle. This shows whether the firing reached the heat work you wanted, or whether the kiln fired too hot or too cool.
The template suits Orton Large Cones and self-supporting cones. The temperature values in degrees Celsius are printed on the back. Orton also offers the same template with Fahrenheit values.
Reading the cones
Let the cones cool after the firing and hold them against the template with the base at the reference line. As a guide, a cone has fully bent when its tip has leant over to about the height of its base, which corresponds roughly to the 5 o'clock position. If it still stands more upright, the firing reached too little heat work; if it lies flatter, it reached too much.
Please note: cones do not measure temperature alone, but the combination of temperature and time. The Celsius values on the back are therefore only a guide and depend on the rate of heating.
