Paints and pencils for school, hobby and studio

Paints and pencils from crayons to oil paint

In the Paints & Pencils category you'll find supplies for kindergarten, school, hobby and studio, from the first wax crayon to artist oil paint. To help you find the right thing quickly, the range is organized by technique and purpose.

Which paint suits your technique

For drawing there are graphite pencils and leads, colored pencils, fineliners and markers, plus pastels, chalk and charcoal. For water-based painting you'll find watercolors and watercolor pencils, gouache, tempera and school watercolors. Acrylic and oil paints suit canvas, wood and other primed surfaces, while inks suit calligraphy and drawing. There are also specialty paints such as fabric, silk, porcelain and glass paints, as well as spray paint, face paint and tools for working with paint.

Many paints come in school, student and artist grade. Artist paints usually have a higher pigment content, more brilliance and better lightfastness, while student grades cost less and work well for practice. Also make sure paint and surface go together. Fabric and porcelain paints must be heat-set or baked according to the manufacturer's instructions. Which paints are suitable for children is stated in the manufacturer's information on each product.

• Pencils and pens for drawing, writing and coloring

Tip: If you're trying a new technique, start with a small set and buy individual colors later as you need them. That way you first learn which colors you really use.
