How to work with special fabrics

The material information shows whether a fabric is washable, can be ironed or is mainly meant for decor. Materials that don't fray can be used with raw edges, while fraying ones need finishing with a zigzag or serger stitch. Especially for decor, it's worth combining different types, for example a calm solid with an eye-catching specialty fabric as an accent. Plan a little extra with unusual materials so you can test cutting and seams on a scrap first. Iron synthetic and coated fabrics only at a low temperature with a pressing cloth in between.

Tip: It's best not to pin coated fabrics, because the holes stay visible. Use sewing clips instead, or pin only within the seam allowance.
