Invisible zippers for a clean look

An invisible zipper disappears almost completely into the seam of the finished garment. The coil sits on the back of the tape, so only the small pull tab is visible from the outside. That suits dresses, skirts and blouses, as well as dressy bags.

How to sew in the zipper invisibly

Here you'll find models in nylon or polyester in lengths from 15 to 50 cm and various colors. Unlike a regular zipper, you sew in an invisible zipper before the seam below it is closed. Carefully press the coil open at a low temperature beforehand so you can stitch closer to the teeth, and test this on the end of the tape first. A special invisible zipper foot guides the coil and makes the job much easier; a regular zipper foot works too but takes more patience. For the color, a shade as close to the fabric as possible is enough, since small differences are hardly noticeable.

Tip: Choose a zipper slightly longer than the planned opening, because the lowest section can't be sewn in all the way to the end. Sew from the top to just before the slider, which sits far down while you work.
