Coil zippers for clothing, bags and pillows

In a coil zipper, a continuous plastic coil made of polyester or nylon forms the interlocking element instead of individual teeth. This makes the zipper flexible and light and lets it open and close smoothly. Here you'll find models in lengths from 15 to 70 cm and in many colors.

What coil zippers are good for

Because the coil bends easily, it follows curves too, for example on cosmetic bags, pencil cases or pillows with rounded corners. In clothing it adds little bulk and feels comfortable against the body, for example in skirts, pants or jackets made of lighter fabrics. For very heavy materials such as thick leather or rugged outdoor fabrics that take a lot of stress, a metal or VISLON zipper is often the better choice. If a closed-end coil zipper is too long, you can shorten it: sew across the coil several times at the length you want and cut off the excess tape below.

Tip: Sew close along the coil with the zipper foot, and partway through, move the slider out of the way with the needle down and the presser foot raised. That keeps the seam straight without having to sew around the slider.
