Which tool suits which surface

With stencils, you apply paint to paper, fabric or walls with a stencil brush, sponge or paint roller. Silicone stamps are usually clear and can be positioned precisely on an acrylic block. Wooden stamps are sturdy and sit well in your hand, while fabric stamps are made for printing on shirts, bags and pillows.

The ink has to suit the surface: ink pads are fine for paper, while fabrics need fabric paint or fabric ink pads, set according to the manufacturer's instructions. Print multicolor motif sets layer by layer and let each color dry well before the next one. After use, clean stencils and stamps with water or a suitable cleaner.

Tip: When stenciling, pick up only a little paint, dab off the excess and work from the outside in – that way nothing bleeds under the edges. A bit of painter's tape holds the stencil in place.
