FIMO blade set – rigid, flexible and ripple blade for cutting canes

The FIMO blade set by Staedtler (art. no. 8700 04) is cutting equipment for modelling clay. It contains three stainless steel blades: one rigid, one flexible and one ripple blade. According to the manufacturer, they cut without squashing or smearing the clay and give precise cuts. They are particularly suitable for canes, that is, rolls of clay with a pattern running all the way through, from which you cut thin slices.

The set comes on a blister card and includes two rubber grips. According to the manufacturer, they are there to help prevent injuries.

Which blade for what?

The rigid blade is suited to straight cuts through blocks, rolls and canes. With the flexible blade you can bend the edge slightly and follow curved lines. The ripple blade leaves a wavy cut surface, which you can use, for example, to make grooved or wavy edges on slices and strips.

Cutting canes

Place the cane on a smooth surface and position the blade vertically. Cut through with even, light pressure. After a few slices, turn the cane a little so that it does not flatten on one side. If the clay is soft and distorts as you cut, let the cane cool briefly beforehand so that the slices keep their shape. Always guide the blade away from your body and fingers, and keep your free hand out of the cutting line.
