Schmincke artists' pigment – pure pigment powder for making your own paints

The Schmincke series 18 artists' pigment is pure pigment powder without binder, which you use to make your own paints. You decide whether it becomes watercolour, acrylic, oil, gouache or tempera. Depending on the binder, you control consistency, opacity and gloss, and can work anywhere from delicate glazes to thick impasto. The pigment comes in a 100 ml jar. Choose your colour from the options.

According to Schmincke, the pigments are pure and lightfast. Because no binder is included, the technique depends entirely on the binder you add. This lets you mix different paints from the same pigment depending on the project and build up your own palette. The pigments can be combined with suitable Schmincke binders.

Making paint from the pigment

Put a small amount of pigment on a glass or grinding plate and add the binder drop by drop. Grind the mixture with a palette knife or glass muller until no lumps or grains can be felt and the paint spreads evenly. With more binder the paint becomes more transparent, with less it becomes thicker. Mix only as much as you will use in the near future and transfer the rest to a tightly sealing container.

Good to know

The pigment is a fine powder. Work calmly and away from draughts so that no dust is stirred up, and do not breathe it in. Decide which technique goes with which binder before mixing, because pigment without binder can only be turned into paint once the binder is added. A small test swatch on the surface you will be painting on shows you the opacity and shade before you mix larger quantities.
