Schmincke matt acrylic varnish – water-based final varnish for acrylic painting

Schmincke matt acrylic varnish is a water-based final varnish for acrylic painting. It dries to a matt finish, is colourless, tough and flexible, non-yellowing and resistant to ageing. It is ready to use, so you do not need to mix it. The varnish is intended for interior use and is made in Germany.

The varnish is water-miscible and dries water-insoluble. If it is too viscous for your painting, you can thin it with water if needed. Once dry, it forms a water-insoluble film on the paint layer. Choose the container size from the options: 60 ml and 200 ml are available.

Applying the varnish

Shake the varnish before use. Apply it quickly at room temperature with a suitable varnishing brush. Important: the paint layer must be completely dry. For thinly applied acrylic paint this is the case after about 3 days, for impasto application only after 1–2 weeks. Varnishing too early traps moisture beneath the layer. Schmincke recommends carrying out individual preliminary tests.

Cleaning, storage and removal

Clean your tools with soap and water straight after use, as dried varnish is water-insoluble. Close the container immediately after working and store it in a cool, dry place protected from frost. If you want to remove the varnish later, according to Schmincke this can be done with a mildly alkaline solution of 2–3 level teaspoons of bicarbonate of soda per 100 ml of water, or with a standard varnish remover.

Matt or gloss?

This varnish gives your acrylic painting a matt surface without glossy reflections. If you would like a glossy surface, Schmincke also offers a water-based gloss varnish.
