Talens Gouache Extra Fine Basic Set, 10 Tubes of 20 ml

Talens Gouache Extra Fine Basic Set – 10 colours for matt, opaque coverage

The Talens (Royal Talens) Basic Set contains 10 tubes of Gouache Extra Fine, 20 ml each, 200 ml in total. This poster paint is highly pigmented, dries matt and gives strong coverage. Adding water makes it slightly more transparent. It is based on dextrin, which according to the manufacturer gives a smooth consistency and reduces surface shine. This makes it well suited to even areas of colour without visible brushstrokes, for illustration, design and soft colour gradients.

The set is a selection of the most popular colours. Pure magenta, cyan and lemon yellow are not included. If you mainly want primary colours for mixing, the set of 8 with Yellow 205, Magenta 397 and Cyan 501 is a better fit. The tubes come in a sturdy cardboard box with printed colour swatches, so you can compare the shades beforehand.

Colours in the set

The set contains these colours:

• 100 White
• 200 Yellow
• 227 Yellow Ochre
• 311 Vermilion
• 318 Carmine
• 411 Burnt Sienna
• 506 Ultramarine Deep
• 566 Prussian Blue (Phthalo)
• 616 Viridian
• 703 Black (Black Intenso)

Working with the gouache

Squeeze a little paint from the tube onto a palette and mix it with water. The more water you add, the more transparent the application; straight from the tube it gives strong coverage. Add white to lighten shades and black to darken them. For soft gradients, blend the colours into one another on the paper or the palette. Note that the paint is not waterproof once dry: a damp layer on top can dissolve the one beneath, which you can use for soft transitions. Let areas dry completely before painting details over them. Try new mixes on a scrap of paper first, so you can judge how the colour looks when dry.
