The Faber-Castell Black Edition set contains 10 coloured felt-tip pens with a soft brush tip in a card case. You can write, draw, fill in areas and practise hand lettering: depending on how you hold the pen, you get fine or broad strokes. The bright colours show up best on light paper.

The ink is based on food colourings and can be washed out of most textiles. The pens have a black plastic barrel, and the coloured cap shows you the ink colour. This makes it quick to find the right pen in the case.

Working with the brush tip

With light pressure and the pen held upright, you draw fine lines; with more pressure and the pen held at a flatter angle, the strokes become broader. In hand lettering, you press firmly on the downstrokes and lightly on the upstrokes, which creates the typical contrast between thick and thin lines. Practise this on a test sheet first. You will fill areas most evenly by working side by side in one direction and not letting the ink dry before you lay down the next stripe.

Looking after the pens

A brush tip gives way if you press too hard. Work on smooth paper rather than on a very rough surface, so the tip keeps its shape for longer. Put the cap back on firmly after use so the tip does not dry out.
