Caran d'Ache Neopastel Extra-Fine Oil Pastels, Set of 24

Caran d'Ache Neopastel Set of 24 – Soft Oil Pastels for Drawing and Blending

The Caran d'Ache Neopastel Extra-Fine Oil Pastels set of 24 (art. no. 7400.324) contains 24 round oil pastels for drawings, sketches, illustrations and mixed-media work. The pastels have a soft, velvety texture and a matt finish, and the colours cover well. According to Caran d'Ache, extra-fine pigments and inert oil mean the pastel does not crumble. The colours are water-resistant, and for each colour Caran d'Ache gives the colour number and lightfastness.

The set contains all the basic colours in a range of shades. You can use it to build up flowers, still lifes and landscapes, for example.

Working with Neopastel

Depending on the stroke, you use the tip, the angled edge or the broad side of the pastel. The tip is for lines and details, while the broad side covers areas quickly. The colours can be layered, smudged and blended with your finger. This creates soft transitions and additional mixed tones. Oil pastel is greasy, so wipe your fingers between colours to avoid carrying pigment across. With white spirit and a brush you can dissolve the colour and work it in a painterly way.

Choosing a set

The Neopastel range comprises 96 shades in total, and the sets come with 12, 24, 48 and 96 pastels. The set of 24 covers the main colour ranges in several shades and suits you well if you want to get to know Neopastel or would like a manageable selection to take out and about. With more colours you save yourself mixing by layering, and the box of 96 contains the complete range.
