Faber-Castell PITT natural drawing charcoal – soft, smudgeable, erasable
PITT natural drawing charcoal from Faber-Castell (art. no. 129398) is intended for sketches, shading and expressive drawings. The pack contains 6 sticks with a diameter of 6–11 mm. According to the manufacturer, the blue-grey charcoal glides softly over the paper, blends and smudges easily and can be erased and drawn over repeatedly. That makes it handy for drafts where you want to lay in areas and still change them later.
The sticks are grease- and oil-free and give a bluish-black line. The 6–11 mm thickness sits in the middle of the PITT range: use the side to lay in broad areas and the tip to draw lines.
Working with natural charcoal
Start by laying in tones over a large area with the flat side of the stick, then blend them with your finger, a blending stump or a cloth to create soft gradations. Then use the tip or edge to add stronger lines and accents. If you press too hard, the charcoal sets firmly into the paper and is harder to remove, so begin lightly and build up the darkness gradually. To correct, lift out light areas with a kneaded eraser. You can secure a finished drawing with fixative so that it does not smudge.
Which thickness to choose
In the PITT range, natural charcoal is also available in Ø 3–6 mm, 5–8 mm and 9–15 mm. Thinner sticks suit details and finer lines, thicker ones suit large areas and broad shading. With Ø 6–11 mm you get both in one pack: lines with the tip and areas with the side.
