Schmincke Dammar Resin Pieces – Natural Resin for Making Your Own Varnish and Painting Mediums
Schmincke dammar in pieces is a natural Palembang dammar made from selected, especially pale pieces. You can use it to make your own oil mediums, tempera emulsions and varnishes, choosing the mixture and quantity to suit your needs.
The resin dissolves in turpentine (Schmincke art. no. 50024, 50102) and white spirit (art. no. 50019). So dissolve it in one of these solvents before using it in oil painting.
Making up the dammar solution
The standard mixture is dammar to solvent at a ratio of 1 : 3 by weight. For 400 g of solution, weigh out 100 g of dammar and 300 g of solvent. Dissolving takes time: as a guide, Schmincke gives about 6 hours for 400 g of solution.
- Put the resin and solvent into a clean container that closes well, e.g. a glass bottle.
- Stand or lay the container so that the surface of the resin is as large as possible; this helps it dissolve.
- Shake briefly several times in between to speed up dissolving.
- Dissolve at room temperature and never heat the resin solution.
Cleaning, storing, testing
Clean your tools straight after use with white spirit (art. no. 50019), turpentine (art. no. 50024, 50102) or brush cleaner (art. no. 50051, 50052). Dried dammar solution remains soluble for a long time, in white spirit, turpentine or varnish remover (art. no. 50060). Close the container immediately after use and store it in a cool, dry place. Schmincke recommends carrying out individual tests before you use the solution on a painting.
