Liquitex Slow-Dri Medium – acrylic medium for a longer open time

Liquitex Slow-Dri Medium is a fluid acrylic medium that extends the open time of your acrylic paints by 40 %, according to Liquitex. The paint stays mixable and workable for longer. You can paint softer edges and smooth colour gradients or work wet-in-wet without the paint setting too quickly.

The medium thins heavy paints and improves their flow. It also increases transparency, depth of colour and gloss. According to Liquitex, the adhesion and durability of the acrylic paint are retained. It is a fluid medium, not a gel: Slow-Dri Gel is a separate product. The bottle contains 237 ml and can be mixed with all Liquitex products.

Using the medium

Stir the medium into paint or another medium in the amount you want. The more you add, the thinner and more transparent the paint becomes. Stir gently to avoid foaming; if bubbles form, wait for them to rise.

• Can be thinned with up to 25 % water, preferably distilled water
• For long working sessions, mix it directly into the paint on the palette to keep the paint fresh for longer and prevent a skin forming
• As a fixative for pastel, graphite or chalk: mix 1 part medium with 1 part distilled water and apply with a spray bottle or airbrush

When to use Slow-Dri

The medium helps when paint dries too quickly on the canvas, for example in portraits, glazes, gradients and fine details. According to Liquitex, it is also suitable for dry and hot climates, where acrylic paint sets particularly fast. When wet, the medium is semi-opaque; once dry, it is transparent. The dry film is flexible and does not crack, does not yellow and is lightfast and archival.
