Mayco Stroke & Coat SP-206 Speckled Sunkissed – speckled glaze with wine-red flecks

Mayco Stroke & Coat SP-206 Speckled Sunkissed is a glossy speckled glaze with wine-red flecks for ceramics and stoneware. It comes in a 236 ml container. It is heavily pigmented and slightly thick, so it can be applied precisely with a brush and also works for full-coverage use.

The firing range runs from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart). You can therefore use the glaze for both low-fire and high-fire work. The surface fires glossy, so you do not need an additional clear glaze. According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe. According to ACMI, the ACMI AP seal means non-hazardous (no labelling required).

Working with the glaze

Apply the glaze to a clean, dust-free, bisque-fired clay body. Stir it well beforehand, as the pigments and flecks settle. The number of coats determines the result: one coat looks slightly transparent, while 2–3 coats give a strong, opaque surface. Let each coat dry before applying the next, and apply it as evenly as possible. This helps you avoid streaks and pooling.

Effect in low-fire and high-fire

In a low-fire firing at cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart), the flecks stay clearly visible and create contrast. In a high-fire firing, for example at cone 6 (approx. 1,222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) up to cone 10, the colours stay stable, but the flecks run slightly and look softer. A test piece on the clay you will actually use shows you beforehand which effect your firing produces. Do not place glazed pieces on the kiln shelf with the glaze touching it; leave the foot free or use kiln wash.
