Product information

Botz Stoneware Glaze 9868 Gletscher – glassy ice blue with fine crackle

Botz stoneware glaze 9868 Gletscher is a liquid, glassy glaze in icy light blue with fine, crystalline crackle. It is intended for stoneware in the firing range 1220–1280 °C and is applied with a brush. At this high firing temperature the glaze and clay body become vitrified and frost-proof, and no longer absorb water.

The colour changes only slightly with temperature: at 1220 °C it gives a delicate, cool light blue. At 1250 °C there is little change. At 1280 °C the glaze becomes somewhat lighter and glassier and tends to run slightly. Because it is semi-transparent, the colour of your clay affects the result. On a light clay body the blue looks clearer, on dark clay more muted. A test piece made from your clay will show you beforehand how Gletscher looks on your own ware.

Application and firing

Stir the glaze well before applying, as some of the ingredients settle at the bottom. Brush 2 to 3 coats onto the bisque-fired clay body and let each coat dry thoroughly before applying the next. This gives an even coat thickness, on which the colour and the crackle develop cleanly.

  • Firing range: 1220–1280 °C
  • Recommended: 1250 °C with a 30-minute hold
  • Allow to dry completely between coats

Crackle and running

The fine crackle forms because the glaze and the clay body shrink by different amounts as they cool. On Gletscher it is intended and is part of the look. The glaze tends to run, especially at 1280 °C. Apply it more thinly on the lower third of the piece and leave the foot free of glaze. This keeps the kiln shelf clean. You can also protect it with kiln wash or a firing plate.
