Mayco Stoneware SW-140 Black Matte – matt stoneware glaze in deep black
Mayco Stoneware SW-140 Black Matte is a stoneware glaze for ceramics, fired in the stoneware range, that gives a smooth, matt, deep black surface. At 1230 °C the glaze develops this smooth matt finish. The colour becomes darker at 1305 °C.
You control the coverage through the number of coats: applied thinly, the clay body shows through the glaze, especially on dark and speckled clays. With three or more coats the finish becomes more opaque and solid. According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe. It is therefore intended for cups, bowls and plates, as well as for vases and decorative pieces.
Firing and results
Mayco gives the stoneware range of approx. 1200 to 1300 °C as the firing range. The glaze is designed for a firing at cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) without running, with a true matt finish. A reduction firing at cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart) is also possible; the colours become darker there. The temperatures in °C are guide values. The best way to see how your kiln and your clay react is to try a test piece.
Applying the glaze
Apply the glaze to bisque-fired ceramics. Brushing on is the usual method. Mayco expressly states that the glaze must not be sprayed.
- Stir the glaze thoroughly before applying
- Apply even coats and let each coat dry to the touch
- For the clay to show through, glaze thinly; for opacity, apply three or more coats
- Leave the foot free of glaze or wipe it clean so that the piece does not stick to the kiln shelf
