Mayco Designer Liner SG-406 Brown – fine lines and lettering on ceramics

The Mayco Designer Liner SG-406 in Brown is a clay-based, highly pigmented liner with a metal writing tip for fine or bold lines, lettering and illustrations on ceramics. The bottle contains 37 ml. You apply the colour straight from the tip, so you don't need an extra brush. You can also blur the liner with a brush to create watercolour or ink-wash effects.

SG-406 belongs to the Mayco Designer Liner series, numbered SG-401 to SG-410. You choose the colour by number; application is the same for all of them.

Firing and glaze

Without a glaze over it, SG-406 fires matt. It works best combined with a non-running, clear or semi-transparent glaze, so the lines stay sharp. For SG-406, Mayco recommends the clear glaze SW-004 Zinc-Free Clear. It is fired in the range cone 06 to cone 6 (approx. 998 to approx. 1,222 °C, guide value per Orton chart). The colour can be applied to greenware, bisque-fired ware and glazed surfaces.

Working with the liner

The liner is not dimensional: it does not form raised lines but lies flat. If applied too thickly, it may crack and possibly flake off.

• Test line width and pressure first on a test tile.
• Draw the line at an even pace and apply thinly rather than thickly.
• Let the liner dry before glazing or continuing to work.
• Close the bottle after use so the tip doesn't clog. If it has dried, clear it with a fine needle.
