da Vinci COLINEO gouache brush set – three synthetic brushes for details and larger areas
The COLINEO gouache brush set from da Vinci (series 4202) contains three brushes for gouache: two round brushes from series 5522 in sizes 2 and 6, and one flat brush from series 5822 in size 8. The fibres are a synthetic substitute for Kolinsky sable hair. They are made of synthetic fibres of different lengths, both straight and wavy, with very fine tips, and feel soft. With a single set you can work from fine lines to larger areas of colour.
As well as gouache, the brushes also work with watercolour and fluid acrylic paints. Paper and canvas are suitable painting surfaces. The short, hexagonal handle made of water-resistant laminated wood sits comfortably in the hand and suits working at a table at close range.
Which brush for which job?
The no. 2 round brush is the finest in the set: use its tip for thin lines, small details and outlines. The no. 6 round brush holds more paint and suits medium-sized shapes and soft gradients. With the no. 8 flat brush you cover larger areas evenly and paint straight edges. This makes the set a compact basic kit for gouache on paper.
Tips for use and care
Gouache gives the best coverage when you mix it to a creamy consistency and do not thin it too much. After painting, rinse the brushes in clean water, reshape the hairs and leave them to dry lying flat. If they are left standing in water for long periods, the fibres and handle can warp.
