da Vinci COLINEO sword brush – fine lines and washes in watercolour

The da Vinci COLINEO watercolour brush, series 5527, is a sword brush with an angled edge for watercolour painting. The brush head is made of synthetic fibres of different lengths, a mix of straight and wavy. According to da Vinci, this gives an extra fine tip, high elasticity and high colour capacity, so the properties are very similar to Kolinsky red sable hair, but made from synthetic fibres.

The hexagonal handle is made of multicoloured hi-tech laminated wood. The brush is made in Germany.

Working with the sword brush

Draw fine lines with the tip. Press harder and the stroke becomes wider. If you turn the brush as you draw, the stroke width changes smoothly, so you can paint elegant swirls, grasses or twigs. For washes, apply the colour to damp paper and let it flow together. The high colour capacity of the fibres helps you paint longer lines in one stroke. The angled edge gives you clear guidance as you work.

Series 5527 is available in several sizes. Choose your size from the options. Smaller brush heads suit details and fine lines, while larger ones hold more colour and cover broader strokes.
