The Contemporary Landscape set (series 4146) from da Vinci contains three synthetic watercolour brushes for gradients, precise textures and thin lines. It was put together by the Brazilian artist Ari de Goes Jr., who says it covers exactly what he needs for his work.

The three brushes cover the typical stages of watercolour painting: laying in areas, guiding the colour and adding details. All have a short handle and very soft to soft fibres. The set is particularly well suited to landscapes that combine sky, water and fine branches or grasses in one picture.

Which brush for what?

Each brush in the set has its own job, so three brushes are enough for a watercolour.

• DARTANA-SPIN 188, size 12: extremely fine tip with a wide range between broad and thin lines – depending on the pressure, you can move from outline to bold stroke without changing brush.
• CASANEO wash brush 498, size 4: holds a particularly large amount of water and paint, so it works well for underpainting and laying in larger areas.
• CASANEO rigger 1290, size 4: for full yet precise strokes, for example long lines or branches.

Working with the set

Start with the wash brush: dampen the paper or lay in the large areas and gradients with plenty of paint, such as sky and water. Once the area has dried slightly, add texture with the rigger and fine details with the DARTANA-SPIN. Do not apply details to paper that is too wet, otherwise the lines will bleed. After painting, rinse the brushes in clean water, reshape the tip and leave them to dry lying flat.
