da Vinci Series 132 Pastel Brush – Stippling Brush for Blending Pastel
The da Vinci Series 132 pastel brush is a round specialist brush with a flat-cut head, used to blend fine pastel pigments into the paper. The pony hair with natural tips is soft. You can work colours into one another and draw out gentle transitions.
The stippling shape presses the pigments evenly into the texture of the painting surface. This is particularly useful on paper or board with a pronounced surface. The handle is short, so you work close to the sheet and can control the brush even in small areas. The seamless ferrule is silver-coloured and the wooden handle is polished blue. Choose your size from the options.
Blending pastel with the stippling brush
First apply the pastel colour with a stick or pencil. Then place the brush down with its flat face and work the pigments into the paper texture with small dabbing or circular movements. For soft transitions, use light pressure and work from the lighter area into the darker one. Wipe the brush on a cloth when you change colour, otherwise you will carry pigment into the next colour. For very different colour families, such as pale yellows next to dark blue, it is worth using a separate brush.
Which size to choose
Smaller sizes suit details, highlights and tight spots; larger ones suit areas and broad gradations.
