The JAXELL Soft Pastels set of 36 from Honsell contains 36 soft pastel chalks in artist quality in a range of shades. You can use them to draw in detail, shade finely and create gentle colour gradients. The high pigment density gives strong, brilliant colour application.

The chalks are square (10 × 10 mm) and 64 mm long. Use the broad side to lay in areas and the edge for lines and details. With 36 colours you have enough room to choose shades directly rather than having to mix constantly.

Working with soft pastels

Soft pastels smudge easily. Apply the colour lightly at first and blend it with a finger, a blending stump or a cloth when you want soft transitions. For light-to-dark gradients, lay in the light shades first and put the dark ones over them. With a damp brush you can blend the chalk like watercolour. Combining it with sanguine or charcoal is also possible, for example for strong outlines or deep shadows. Soft pastels are delicate: store finished work protected so that the colour dust does not smudge.

Choosing a set

The range is available as sets of 12, 24, 36, 48 and 60, as well as a set of 12 in brown or grey tones. With 36 colours you have a wide palette for landscapes, portraits and still lifes and can pick intermediate shades directly. If you would like to try them out first, a smaller set is enough; for particularly fine nuances, choose one of the larger options.
