da Vinci TOP-ACRYL Series 4221 – Brush Set for Acrylic and Oil Paint
The da Vinci TOP-ACRYL brush set, series 4221, contains three synthetic brushes for acrylic and oil painting: a flat brush no. 12, a filbert brush no. 8 and a round brush no. 4. The brushes are designed for thick, impasto paint and rough painting surfaces. According to da Vinci, the synthetic fibres are extremely hard-wearing and pick up paint evenly.
The three shapes cover the main stages of a painting: laying in areas, shaping transitions and edges, and adding details. The long, hexagonal handle sits in the hand in the traditional way and lets you work at a little distance from the canvas.
Which brush for which job?
The three brushes complement one another in shape and size. This is helpful if you want to work up a subject from broad areas to fine detail with a single set.
- Flat brush no. 12: for broad areas, underpainting and straight edges
- Filbert brush no. 8: rounded tip for soft transitions and edges, for areas and contours
- Round brush no. 4: for lines, smaller shapes and details
Working with impasto paint
Thick paint application and rough painting surfaces such as textured canvas put a lot of strain on the fibres. The synthetic fibres in this set are designed for this. Dip the brush into the paint only up to about two thirds of the hair length, so that no paint gets into the ferrule and the hairs do not splay. Rinse acrylic paint out with water straight away, before it dries in the brush. Remove oil paint with a cloth first, then clean the brushes thoroughly afterwards. Lay the brushes flat to dry; the hexagonal handle will not roll away.
