The da Vinci PRETTY ART SET from the 4255 series is a set of three round watercolour brushes with different hair lengths. It takes you from fine detail to larger areas of colour. The brushes are called PRETTY PINK, LILI and MINT and have short, coloured handles. They are traditionally made by hand and bound with gold-coloured wire.

According to da Vinci, the extra-soft, crimped synthetic fibres hold plenty of paint and still form precise points. This lets you place colour exactly where you want it, paint soft transitions and try out different strokes. The set also includes a Schmincke HORADAM Dot Card on Hahnemühle paper, a da Vinci cleaning soap and a personal greeting message from brush maker Anita. The set comes in packaging that is also suitable for giving as a gift.

Three brushes, three uses

The different hair lengths each carry water and paint differently. The medium-length brush, PRETTY MINT, sits between PINK and LILI. The shorter hair is better for accents and details, while the longer hair holds more water and paint for larger areas and flowing gradients. Because all three have a round tip, you can switch between techniques without changing the brush shape.

Trying out the set

The Dot Card is a colour swatch card: the three colour dots match the handle colours of the brushes.

• Dampen a brush and lift some paint from one of the dots on the card.
• Paint the same colour side by side with all three brushes on watercolour paper.
• Vary the amount of water and the pressure to see how the hair lengths behave.
• Mix the three colours to test new combinations.

Care

After painting, rinse the brushes out with the cleaning soap provided and clean water. Leave them to dry lying flat or hanging with the hair pointing down. Never stand them upright with the hair pointing up, and do not leave them standing on their hair in a glass of water, so that no water runs into the ferrule.
