The da Vinci Hake Paddle series 5097 is a watercolour brush for large areas, soft washes and calligraphy. It takes up the idea of the traditional Japanese hake brush and combines extra-soft, wavy synthetic fibres with a paddle handle.

The wavy fibres hold plenty of water and paint. This helps when you want to lay in backgrounds or skies in one go, without constantly re-dipping. The short paddle handle has a laser-engraved grip zone that gives a secure hold. You guide the brush loosely from the wrist and spread water and paint across the paper in broad strokes. The ferrule is made of stainless steel in DUROPLUS quality.

Working with the Hake Paddle

First dampen the brush evenly so that the fibres can take up water and paint. For larger washes, mix enough paint before you begin. That way you can work the area in one continuous pass and avoid visible start marks. Draw the brush across the paper with its broad side in steady strokes and let the movement come from the wrist.

• For soft transitions, brush out the still-wet area of paint with the brush only slightly damp.
• For calligraphic strokes, use the broad edge and the flat of the brush; depending on the pressure, the stroke becomes wider or narrower.
• For backgrounds and skies, paint on dampened paper so that the colours run into each other.

Care

After painting, rinse the brush with clean water and gently squeeze the water out of the fibres. Leave it to dry lying flat or hang it with the bristles pointing down. Otherwise water can run into the ferrule. Also never stand it on its bristles in a water jar, so that the soft fibres keep their shape.
