The MICRO NOVA Series 170 round brush from da Vinci is made for micro painting, miniatures and tabletop, in other words for work where tiny details matter. The extra-fine, gold-coloured synthetic fibres are modelled on kolinsky hair in elasticity and paint pick-up. They are very elastic, hold plenty of liquid and keep their shape, so the tip lays down fine lines cleanly.

The brush has a short, black polished hexagonal handle with a silver ferrule. The handle is ergonomically shaped and does not roll off the table. That is handy when you are working on small figures and put the brush down between steps. The series comes in four sizes; choose your size from the options.

Painting fine details

Pick up only a little paint and thin acrylic paint until it flows well but still covers. Then apply eyes, outlines, edges or fine lines in several thin layers rather than one thick one. Do not dip the brush right up to the ferrule: acrylic paint drying there splays the hairs and ruins the tip. Rinse the brush from time to time and do not leave it resting in water.

Which size should you choose?

Series 170 comes in four very small sizes that differ in the diameter of the tip. The higher the number before the slash, the finer the tip. For very small details such as pupils or thin lines, choose a size with a higher number. For small areas and a little more paint capacity, a size with a lower number is suitable.
