The lead is 3.8 mm thick and lays down colour softly and with rich pigmentation. According to Faber-Castell, the pigments have high lightfastness and colour brilliance, so your work keeps its colours over the long term. The pencils are smudge- and water-resistant: a finished drawing does not smudge easily and stays put even when it gets damp. Thanks to the Secural bonding (SV), the lead is held firmly in the wood, which makes it more resistant to breaking if a pencil is dropped or sharpened.

Working with Polychromos pencils

The soft laydown is easy to control: start with light pressure and build up the colour in several layers rather than pressing hard straight away. This creates gradients and blends directly on the paper, and you keep room for later corrections. Because the pencils are smudge- and water-resistant, you can work over finished areas with your hand without worry. Sharpen the pencils with a sharp sharpener and turn them as you do so, so that the lead is exposed evenly.

The set of 120 is the largest version of the series, which is also available as a metal tin of 12, 24, 36 and 60. With 120 pencils you have a wide choice close at hand and need to mix fewer shades yourself over several layers. For getting started or for smaller motifs, the smaller sets are often enough.
