Copic Ciao Marker 5+1 Set Skin Tones – five light skin tones and a multiliner

The Copic Skin Tones set contains five alcohol-based Ciao markers in light skin and shadow tones, plus a black multiliner. You can use them to colour faces, hands and figures in illustrations, scribbles, storyboards or manga drawings, and draw the outlines with the liner straight away.

The five colours are E00 (Cotton Pearl), R00 (Pinkish White), R20 (Blush), E43 (Dull Ivory) and V91 (Pale Grape). Each marker has two nibs: a medium broad nib for filling areas and a flexible brush nib (Super Brush) for fine strokes and soft gradients. The colour dries quickly and can be blended and layered on the paper. The markers are refillable and the nibs are replaceable.

Colouring skin tones

The five colours are chosen close together so that you can build up skin tones in stages. Start with the lightest tone over the whole area and add the shadows over it with the next darker marker. Because the ink can be layered on the paper, soft transitions appear if you work over it while it is still wet.

• E00 and R00: very light base tones for highlights and delicate skin
• R20: rosy tone, for example for cheeks and lips
• E43: beige mid-tone for shadows and darker skin
• V91: pale violet tone, as a cool shadow over the skin tones

Paper, lines and care

Alcohol ink bleeds through thin paper. Use marker paper or sturdy, smooth drawing paper and place a sheet underneath. Draw the outlines with the multiliner first and let them dry before going over them with the markers. Do a quick test on a scrap piece beforehand. Put the caps back on the markers straight after use so that the nibs do not dry out. When the ink runs out, refill the markers instead of replacing them.
