Faber-Castell Colour Grip watercolour pencils, set of 12, triangular

Faber-Castell Colour Grip set of 12 – water-soluble colouring pencils with grip zone

The Faber-Castell Colour Grip set of 12 (art. no. 112412) contains twelve water-soluble colouring pencils in a cardboard case. You draw with them, then blend the colour with a damp brush for a watercolour effect. The standout feature is the ergonomic triangular shape with a patented grip zone: your fingers find their place and the pencil sits securely in your hand. According to Faber-Castell, the pencils are suitable for right- and left-handers and intended for older children.

The lead is bonded into the wood with a special glue, making it especially break-resistant, which matters for pencils in a school bag or on the craft table. The colour washes out of most textiles. The name field on the barrel helps stop pencils getting mixed up at school or nursery. The lacquer is water-based, and according to the manufacturer the wood comes from FSC-certified forestry. The pencils are made in Germany.

Working with water-soluble colouring pencils

Start by drawing as you would with ordinary colouring pencils, ideally with light pressure. Then brush over the lines with a damp brush: the colour dissolves and spreads into soft, watercolour-like areas. Use very little water, as thin paper soon buckles. A heavier paper gives you more room to work. Dry areas remain as clear pencil lines, so you can combine lines and blended areas in one picture.

Which set to choose

The set of 12 is a manageable starting point for school, sketchpad or on the go. The Colour Grip range also includes sets of 6, 24 and 36 pencils, as well as an erasable set of 10. If you want to mix or grade many shades of colour, a larger set gives you more choice.
