The Faber-Castell Grippy Jumbo colouring pencils (art. no. 110624) are thick triangular colouring pencils in a set of 10, made for first attempts at drawing and for small hands. The ergonomic triangular shape gives the fingers a clear place to rest. The grip zone stops them slipping. The lead is break-resistant, so the pencils should cope well with a fall from the table.

The pencils are 3-in-1: you can use them like a colouring pencil or a wax crayon. They become watercolour pencils because they are water-soluble. That way children can paint both dry and with water using just one set. The set contains 10 pencils in assorted colours and comes in a cardboard case. It is intended for children aged 3 and over.

Drawing with the 3-in-1 pencils

Used dry, the pencils work like thick colouring pencils. If you press harder, you get rich, opaque areas like those from a wax crayon. For watercolour effects, first draw dry and then go over the colour with a wet brush. The colour then spreads into soft, translucent areas. Use paper that can take moisture, otherwise it will cockle.

Sharpening and cleaning

The pencils are thick. You will need a sharpener that takes jumbo diameters. At 40 °C, colour residue can be washed out of most textiles. Wipe it off smooth surfaces.
