Faber-Castell Pitt charcoal pencil – grease-free charcoal for sketches and studies
The Faber-Castell Pitt charcoal pencil is a grease- and oil-free charcoal pencil in black for sketches, studies and drawings that you want to smudge and correct. Charcoal is the oldest drawing material in the world. It blends easily, is simple to correct and can be drawn over again and again. On paper, it gives a bluish-black tone.
Choose the hardness grade from the options. Softer charcoal gives a darker, softer line, while harder charcoal keeps its point longer and suits finer lines.
Working with the charcoal pencil
Start by laying in the basic shape with loose strokes. Charcoal is easy to correct, so you can lighten lines again with a putty rubber. Build up dark areas in several layers and blend transitions with your finger or a paper stump. Because the pencil is grease- and oil-free, you can rework areas again and again. Charcoal only sits loosely on the paper and smudges easily. A fixative protects the finished drawing, and a sheet of paper between drawings prevents smudges in the portfolio.
Sharpening
You can shape the pencil with the Faber-Castell eraser knife 181398 or a sharpening machine. Use a fine point for outlines and details, and the flattened side for broad, soft areas.
