Schmincke masking pen – liquid masking film with a dosing tip for reserving areas

The Schmincke masking pen is liquid masking film in a pen with a dosing tip. You use it to reserve areas of a picture that are to stay white in watercolour, gouache or airbrush work. The synthetic resin dispersion is ammonia-free and odourless. It is ready to use and comes straight from the tip, so you can place fine lines, patterns and small areas precisely.

Once dry, the film protects the painting surface from paint. When you have finished painting, you rub it off again. Choose your version from the options.

Working with the masking pen

Apply the masking film to a dry, clean painting surface and let it dry completely. Depending on the thickness of the layer, this takes from a few minutes to over an hour. Only then paint over it with water-based paints such as watercolour, gouache or AERO COLOR Professional. Let the paint dry as well before you remove the film. Then rub it off gently with a dry, grease-free finger, without peeling it off. Peeling can damage the paper surface.

Paper and limitations

The pen is suitable for watercolour paper, smooth drawing card and similar painting surfaces. Soft, lightly sized papers with a texture, such as rag or torchon papers, are unsuitable. Test it on an offcut of your paper before you mask the actual picture. Do not thin the film with water. It then penetrates deeper into the surface and is harder to remove. Remove it completely after 2 days at the latest, otherwise it may yellow.

Storage and care of the tip

Close the pen again immediately after each use. If the tip has dried on, it is best cleaned while dry with a needle. Store the pen in a cool, dry place and protect it from frost.
