The round weaving loom from Rico Design is a wooden frame with a diameter of 29 cm for round woven pieces such as coasters, doilies, placemats or dreamcatchers. Small notches are cut around the edge: you hook the warp thread into them, so it cannot slip and can be tensioned evenly.

Weaving is one of the oldest techniques for making textile fabric. The loom is a simple way to start, as you need no tools other than yarn and a weaving needle. It works with many types of yarn, so you can use leftovers as well as new balls.

Weaving on the round loom

First stretch the warp thread across the centre in a star shape by hooking it into opposite notches. Use an odd number of warp threads. When you then weave in a spiral from the centre outwards, over and under alternate by themselves, and you do not have to shift the pattern by hand. With the weaving needle, pass the weft thread alternately over and under the warp threads and gently push each round towards the centre.

Choosing yarn and a common mistake

For the warp thread, it is best to use a strong yarn that does not stretch too much. Many types of yarn can be used for the weft; the thicker the yarn, the faster the woven piece grows. The most common mistake is pulling too tight: the warp threads are then drawn towards the centre and the fabric ripples. Lay in the weft thread loosely and press it down only lightly.
