BC Garn Jaipur Peace Silk – Eri silk lace yarn made without harming the silkworms

Jaipur Peace Silk from BC Garn is a lace yarn in 100% Eri silk for fine knitting such as scarves, shawls and lightweight jumpers. One ball weighs 50 g and has a length of approx. 300 m. That works out at 600 m per 100 g, which helps with planning if your pattern gives the yarn requirements in grams. Choose your colour from the options.

Peace silk stands for non-violent production: the silk comes from a farm in Thailand, and the Eri silkworm moths leave the cocoon before the silk is processed. Eri silk is less smooth and glossy than mulberry silk and feels rather dry.

What the yarn is suited to and how much you need

The fine lace weight shows off lace patterns, cables and other textures clearly. It is knitted with 2–3 mm needles, and the ball band gives 24 stitches to 10 cm. What matters is the tension given in your pattern; the figure on the ball band is only a guide. Silk is not elastic, so the yarn works particularly well for scarves, shawls and lightweight tops for spring and summer. For a women's jumper in size 38 (UK 12), allow approx. 300 g, i.e. about six balls. The quantity needed depends on the pattern, so it is best to allow a spare ball and to buy all the balls from the same dye lot where possible.

Care

Hand wash the knitted piece with a detergent for delicates, without fabric softener. Silk may bleed a little. A splash of vinegar in the rinsing water can reduce bleeding. Silk can stretch after washing, so dry the piece flat and pulled into shape.
