BeaverCraft K8/08 carving gouge – 8 mm blade for chip carving and textures
The BeaverCraft K8/08 carving gouge (sweep No. 8) has a straight, rounded cutting edge and an 8 mm wide blade. You guide it by hand to remove wood, cut notches and carve fine patterns or textures such as scales or eyes.
The blade is made of carbon steel (1066 steel) with a hardness of 57–59 HRC and, according to BeaverCraft, is sharpened and stropped by hand. It is sharp and ready to use straight from the factory. The handle is made of ash and impregnated with oil. BeaverCraft describes the chisel as suitable for beginners and experienced wood carvers. Compared with the sweep No. 5 with a 12 mm blade width, the No. 8 is the narrower version for smaller details.
Working with the carving gouge
Clamp the workpiece firmly so that both hands are free and it cannot slip. Rest the chisel flat on its bevel and guide it through the wood with controlled pressure. Always keep your leading hand behind the cutting edge and never carve towards your hand. Take several shallow shavings rather than one deep cut: the wood is then less likely to tear out and you keep the line under control. Softwood is best; a fine edge dulls more quickly in hardwood.
Care and sharpness
Carbon steel rusts if it stays damp. Wipe the blade dry after carving and, for longer storage, rub it with a thin layer of oil. The chisel should not be put in the dishwasher or left in water. When the edge loses its sharpness, strop the bevel again with a leather strop and polishing compound.
