BeaverCraft K5/12 – straight carving gouge, sweep no. 5, for relief and chip carving
The BeaverCraft K5/12 is a compact carving gouge with a straight, rounded cutting edge (sweep no. 5) and a 12 mm blade width. You use it to remove wood in a controlled way when carving, for example in relief carving. It is also intended for chip carving and fine patterns. The blade is made of carbon steel, is sharpened and stropped by hand according to BeaverCraft, and is ready to use, razor sharp, straight from the factory.
The handle is made of ash and impregnated with oil. With an overall length of 192 mm and a handle length of 115 mm, the gouge is handy and easy to control. BeaverCraft developed it for beginners and for experienced wood carvers.
Working with the gouge
The K5/12 is suitable for roughing out larger amounts of wood in flat stock, for example in relief carving. The rounded edge leaves a hollow, which you can use to deepen surfaces and bring out contours. Clamp the workpiece firmly and always keep your guiding hand behind the cutting edge, never in front of it. Position the gouge by hand and push it through the wood in a controlled stroke. It is designed for hand use only; do not use a hammer or mallet. It is best to work in softwood. In hardwood, the fine edge goes blunt more quickly according to BeaverCraft.
Which sweep to choose
The sweep number describes the curvature of the cutting edge: the higher the number, the more strongly curved it is. No. 5 with a width of 12 mm is the wider, flatter gouge in the series. It removes more wood across its width. For narrower, deeper grooves and fine details, use the sweep no. 8 gouge with an 8 mm blade width.
Care
The blade is made of carbon steel and can rust. Wipe it dry after carving and apply a thin film of oil for longer storage. Avoid the dishwasher and soaking in water.
