BeaverCraft P8/08 palm chisel – for hollows and rounded cuts
The BeaverCraft P8/08 palm chisel is a compact carving tool with a straight, rounded blade (sweep no. 8) for fine but firm, deep cuts in wood. The blade is shorter and the handle more compact than on longer carving gouges. This makes the chisel sit steadily in the palm of your hand and easy to control.
The blade is made of carbon steel, is sharpened and stropped by hand and, according to BeaverCraft, is sharp and ready for use. The ash handle is impregnated with oil.
What the chisel is used for
With the rounded blade you scoop out hollows and rounded recesses, cut gentle grooves and add contours to relief carvings. It is intended mainly for softwood. In hardwood the fine edge dulls more quickly, so it is only recommended for that to a limited extent. The 20° bevel is matched to softwood.
Working safely
Clamp the workpiece firmly or hold it so that both hands stay behind the cutting edge. Cut with the grain and take off several thin shavings rather than one thick one. When the edge loses its sharpness, strop the blade again on a leather strop with polishing compound. This keeps the edge sharp and reduces the risk of the tool slipping in the wood.
