BeaverCraft C17P Universal Detail Pro – palm-grip whittling knife for detail work in softwood
The BeaverCraft C17P Universal Detail Pro is a palm-grip wood carving knife for detail work. Its curved, slightly upswept blade is made of 1066 carbon steel (hardened to 57–59 HRC), makes pull cuts easier and comes sharpened from the factory with a 20° Scandi grind. The ash handle is shaped as a compact palm handle and treated with linseed oil. The knife is suitable for both right- and left-handed users.
According to BeaverCraft, knives with a 20° cutting angle are intended for softwood. In hardwood the fine edge goes blunt more quickly, so the manufacturer does not recommend them for it. You can use the knife to carve out figures, spoon shapes or details, whether you are a beginner or an experienced carver.
Working with the palm grip
The handle rests in the palm of your hand, with your thumb and fingers guiding the knife. This lets you cut in small, controlled strokes, for example for faces, edges or curves. With a Scandi grind, lay the bevel flat on the wood and raise the knife slightly until the edge bites. Cut along the grain and take several thin shavings rather than one thick one, so the wood does not tear out.
Blade care
Carbon steel is not stainless. Wipe the blade dry after carving, store the knife in a dry place and rub the blade with a very thin film of oil if you are taking a longer break. If the edge goes blunt, re-sharpen it with a leather strop and polishing compound.
