BeaverCraft P1/04 – palm chisel with a straight 4 mm blade
The BeaverCraft P1/04 palm chisel is a wood carving tool for fine, straight cuts and finishing work. The blade is straight and flat (sweep no. 1), 4 mm wide and bevelled on one side. It is made of carbon steel and, according to the manufacturer, is hand-sharpened and stropped, so it is sharp and ready to use straight away.
The short ash handle is oil-impregnated and sits in the palm of your hand. This lets you guide the chisel close to the workpiece and control the depth and direction of the cut precisely. According to the manufacturer, it is suitable for softwoods and hardwoods.
Working with the palm chisel
Clamp the workpiece firmly so that both hands are free. Place the bevel flat on the wood and guide the chisel with your palm in the direction of the cut. Keep the holding hand behind the cutting edge at all times and cut away from your body. Take several thin shavings rather than one deep one: the blade then follows the grain cleanly and the wood tears out less. The flat, straight blade is suited to smooth surfaces, sharp edges, borders and the final finishing touches on a carving.
Which width to choose
The P1/04 is part of a range of straight, flat palm chisels with blades of different widths. The P1/01 and P1/02 have blades 1 mm and 2 mm wide. Use the 4 mm blade of the P1/04 for slightly wider surfaces and edges, and the narrower versions for details and tight spots.
