BeaverCraft P1/01 palm chisel – straight blade for fine cuts and finishing
The BeaverCraft P1/01 is a palm chisel with a straight, flat blade (sweep no. 1) for extremely fine straight cuts and finishing work in wood. The blade is 1 mm wide and bevelled on one side. It is made of carbon steel, is sharpened and stropped by hand and, according to the manufacturer, is sharp and ready to use straight away.
The ash handle is impregnated with oil and fits in the palm of your hand. You push the chisel through the wood using hand pressure and can guide it close to the workpiece. The tool is suitable for softwoods and hardwoods.
Working with the palm chisel
Secure the workpiece in a clamp or vice so that both hands are free to guide the tool. The handle sits in the palm of your hand, while the other hand guides the blade close to the cutting edge. Holding the chisel at a shallow angle, push it through the wood in thin shavings. With hardwood, take several fine shavings rather than one deep cut. With the narrow 1 mm edge you can draw fine lines, cut small notches and neaten edges cleanly.
Which blade width should you choose?
At 1 mm, the P1/01 has the narrowest blade in the range and is suited to details and fine contours. For broader lines and areas, the series offers the same straight, flat shape in 2 mm (P1/02) and 4 mm (P1/04).
Care
Carbon steel can rust in damp conditions. Store the chisel somewhere dry, ideally with the blade lightly oiled. A leather strop and a little polishing compound will keep the edge sharp.
