BeaverCraft C16 Roughing Knife – large carving knife for softwood and hardwood
The BeaverCraft C16 roughing knife (Big Roughing Knife) is a large wood carving knife for removing larger amounts of material when carving. The blade is straight with a robust, rounded tip. According to BeaverCraft, the knife cuts softwood and hardwood and is an all-purpose carving knife, especially for beginners.
The blade is 50 mm long and the ash handle 115 mm. This lets you guide the knife close to the cutting edge while still having enough handle to hold it firmly. BeaverCraft has shaped the handle ergonomically.
Roughing out with the C16
When roughing out, you work the basic shape out of the block of wood before moving on to details. Start the cut with the grain and take several thin shavings rather than one thick one. Cutting against the grain easily tears the wood out. Hardwood takes more force, so short, controlled cuts work better than one long stroke. For fine details such as faces or edges, switch to a smaller carving knife afterwards.
Blade care
Carbon steel is not rustproof. Keep the knife dry and protect the blade now and then with a few drops of oil.
