BeaverCraft C4 Carving Knife – Sloyd Knife with Oak Handle for Roughing Out and Carving
The BeaverCraft C4 carving knife is a sloyd knife with a straight blade and rounded tip for carving and roughing out. You can use it to carve spoons, scoops or walking sticks, for example. The blade is made of hardened, sharpened steel. The handle is oak, treated with natural linseed oil.
With an 80 mm blade, the knife is easy to control, and with a 120 mm handle it sits securely in your whole hand. It is suitable for right- and left-handed users. Only the knife is supplied; a leather sheath is not included.
What the C4 is designed for
The straight blade is suited to removing wood in longer strokes, known as roughing out, and to shaping blanks. When carving a spoon, you use it first to take the rough shape out of the wood, for example the back of the bowl and the handle. For fine details such as tight notches or small faces, a knife with a shorter, more pointed blade is better suited. The rounded tip is robust and does not break as easily under normal load as a very fine tip.
Safe use and care
Carve wearing a carving glove on the hand holding the wood, using short, controlled strokes. Always cut away from yourself and never towards the hand holding the wood. A sharp knife needs less pressure and slips less often than a blunt one. To re-sharpen it, use a leather strop with polishing compound. Wipe the blade dry after use so the steel does not rust, and store the knife in a dry place. You can treat the oak handle with a little linseed oil when needed.
