BeaverCraft C6 – small chip carving knife for chip carving and detail work

The BeaverCraft C6 chip carving knife is a small carving knife for geometric patterns in chip carving and for fine detail work in wood. The short 27 mm blade is easy to guide precisely, for example when cutting small elements or finishing details on sculptures. The blade is made of 1066 carbon steel with 57–59 HRC and has a Scandi grind. The ash wood handle is treated with natural linseed oil, and according to BeaverCraft the knife can be used with either hand, so it suits right-handed and left-handed users alike.

Cutting a pattern

In chip carving, patterns are made up of small recesses, usually triangles. First draw the pattern on the wood with a pencil and ruler. For a triangle, cut along each side at a slant towards the centre, so that the cuts meet at the bottom and the small chip pops out. Work with several shallow, controlled cuts rather than force, as the blade is only 2 mm thick. A test piece of the same wood helps you practise cutting depth and angle.

Which wood?

According to BeaverCraft, the 20° grind angle is suited to soft woods, for example lime (linden). The manufacturer does not recommend the knife for hardwood, because the fine edge dulls more quickly there. If you want to remove larger amounts of wood or rough out a carving, you will need a sturdier knife. The C6 is intended for details and fine lines. Carbon steel can rust when exposed to moisture, so wipe the blade dry after carving.
