BeaverCraft P1/02 – palm chisel with a straight, flat 2 mm blade

The BeaverCraft P1/02 is a palm chisel for wood carving with a straight, flat blade (sweep no. 1). The carbon steel blade is 2 mm wide and bevelled on one side. It is hand-sharpened and stropped and, according to the manufacturer, ready to use straight away. You can use the chisel for extremely fine straight cuts and finishing work, in both softwood and hardwood.

The ash handle is oil-impregnated and is held in the palm of your hand. With a handle length of just 65 mm and an overall length of 140 mm, you work close to the workpiece and control every cut precisely.

Working with the palm chisel

Clamp the workpiece firmly so that both hands are free for the cut. Hold the chisel with the handle in your palm and remove the wood in thin shavings. Keep your holding hand behind the cutting edge, never in front of it. Cut with the grain where possible: against the grain, softwood in particular tears out easily. The flat blade is well suited to straight edges, clean shoulders and re-cutting surfaces.

Which blade width should you choose?

The P1/02 is part of a range with blade widths of 1 mm (P1/01), 2 mm (P1/02) and 4 mm (P1/04), all of the same length. The narrower blade gets into tight corners and fine details, while the wider one removes more surface in a single stroke. The 2 mm of the P1/02 sits in between.
