BeaverCraft S09 Whittling Knife Set – Spoon Knife and Carving Knives in a Roll

The BeaverCraft S09 is a wood carving set with four knives: a spoon knife for hollowing out and three whittling knives for shapes, edges and details. The blades are made of carbon steel and the handles of wood. The wooden handles sit comfortably in the hand while you carve. The set is stored in a canvas roll.

The set is intended as an introduction to whittling, because a single purchase covers hollowing, rough shaping and fine detail. The spoon knife is made for right-handed use; for left-handers, BeaverCraft offers the S09L version.

Working with the set

With the whittling knives, you remove material in thin shavings rather than pressing deep into the wood. Always cut away from your body and keep your holding hand behind the blade. For fine edges, small faces or patterns, use the smaller detail knives. The spoon knife has a rounded blade: use it to hollow out bowls, such as the bowl of a wooden spoon or a small dish. Where possible, carve with the grain and work in several thin cuts. Soft, even wood such as lime (linden) is easier to work than hardwood with knots.

Caring for the carbon steel blades

Carbon steel is more prone to rust than stainless steel. Clean the blades thoroughly after use, dry them and rub them with a little oil from time to time. Then put the knives back into the roll while dry.
