BeaverCraft S43 – carving knife set for spoons and kuksa in a roll case
The BeaverCraft S43 is a wood carving set with four tools for anyone who wants to carve spoons, bowls or small figures from wood. It contains a spoon knife, a carving knife, a detail knife and a short, curved gouge. A leather strop for honing the blades, polishing compound and a roll case for storage are also included. That gives you tools and sharpening accessories in one set.
The blades are made of carbon steel at 57–59 HRC. According to the manufacturer, the bevel angle is 20°. The handles are made of wood (ash and oak) and sit comfortably in the hand. The set is designed for right-handed users.
Which knife for which job?
Each tool in the set has its own purpose, so you can work from the rough shape to the finest detail with a single set.
- Spoon knife SK2 (30 mm): hollows out spoon bowls, bowls and kuksa
- Carving knife C4 (80 mm blade): for roughing out, flat surfaces and long cuts
- Detail knife C3 (40 mm blade): for fine work, edges and small figures
- Gouge K6L/15 (15 mm wide): cuts grooves, hollows and curves
Sharpening and caring for the blades
A blunt blade slips more easily and takes more force. So draw the straight blades across the leather strop regularly, applying a little polishing compound to it. Pull the blade across the leather with the spine leading, so that the edge does not dig into the leather. Carbon steel can develop surface rust in damp conditions. Wipe the blades dry after carving and store them in the roll case in a dry place. If you are just starting out, practise on lime wood (linden), which is easy to cut, and always carve away from your body.
