BeaverCraft S15X – whittling knife set with walnut handles, leather sheath and strop
The BeaverCraft S15X is a wood carving knife set with three knives for woodwork from rough removal to fine detail. It contains the detail whittling knife C15, the chip carving knife C6 and the large rough-out knife C16. The handles are made of walnut and the blades of 1066 carbon steel. The knives are sharpened ready for use.
The set also includes a leather sheath for storage and transport, plus a leather strop with polishing compound. This keeps the edges in shape without the need for another sharpening tool.
Which knife for which job
Use the rough-out knife C16 at the start to remove a lot of wood and bring the blank roughly into shape. Then take the detail whittling knife C15 for contours, faces and fine edges. The chip carving knife C6 is intended for chip carving patterns, where you cut small chips out in geometric shapes. The cutting bevel is 20° according to BeaverCraft. This suits softwood such as lime (linden). In hardwood the fine edge goes blunt more quickly, so BeaverCraft does not recommend the set for it.
Sharpening the blades with the strop
Apply a little polishing compound to the strop and draw the blade over the leather with the spine leading, that is, away from the cutting edge. Keep the bevel flat on the leather and make several even strokes on each side. This removes the fine burr, and the knives cut cleanly again. After carving, put them back in the leather sheath to keep the edges protected.
