Glorex Silicone Putty – make your own moulds from small objects

Glorex Silicone Putty (art. no. 62407431) is an addition-curing 2-part silicone rubber that you use to take impressions of small objects and make your own moulds for casting. You get two components of 40 g each, a brown and a white paste, 80 g in total. You mix them 1:1 by hand, with no scales or mixing cup.

According to Glorex, taking the impression takes just 10 minutes, the impressions are highly accurate, and up to 50 casts are possible from one mould. The putty is kneadable, elastic and tear-resistant. It is particularly suitable for small originals such as shells, decorative pieces or the corners of a picture frame. According to the manufacturer, you can pour into the finished mould straight away.

Making the mould

The putty hardens within 4–5 minutes. So have the object ready before you mix, and shape the putty only after mixing. Mix only as much as you need for the mould.

• Take equal amounts of the brown and the white paste.
• Knead both pastes with your hands for 40–60 seconds until you have an even colour with no streaks.
• Press the object into the putty, or press the putty onto the object from the outside.
• Leave to harden, remove the object and pour into the mould.

Good to know

Because the putty hardens so quickly, it is not worth keeping any leftover. For larger originals, plan for several portions and mix them one after the other. Do not use the moulds for food.
